IMG_20190304_134440837The last batch of our print catalogues is headed out today. If you haven’t gotten yours in the next week or so, let me know and I’ll make sure you get one. Even though we live in a digital age with easy access to huge amount of information literally at our fingertips, there’s something to be said about flipping through pages that can’t be recreated online.  If you’ve ever read any Marshall McLuhan* he called this a “hot” media – you get immersed in the experience; it fully engages the senses; it holds your interest. On the other side of things, what he called “cool” media – when you’re looking through a product website on a phone or tablet it actually takes more effort; in many cases you need to know what you’re looking for. You’re not as engaged, and aren’t as likely to learn something new.

I’m in one of those strange crossover generations between Gen-X and Millennials where I tend to identify socially more with Gen-X, but am very influenced by the technology that Millennials thrive on. I can remember using card catalogues, and spending time in the stacks at the Scott Library going through volumes of abstracts trying to find just one small piece of information.  Now I can do all of that on my phone.  When it comes down to it, there’s really no right or wrong when it comes to print vs online; it’s all personal preference.  That’s why CLSR continues to put out a Career Development Resources print catalogue, and a Personality Dimensions® print catalogue every year.  When you crack open one of these catalogues you’ll notice a good mix of print and online resources, letting you choose the right tool for the right job.

*Yes I know this is kind of an obscure reference, but it always feels good when I can use something that I learned in my undergrad.
